well the time came, which i was dreading.the interview with the boss.i was only dreading it in case i was turned down.we sat in the office, had a good chat, and a lot of positive stuff was said.i was chuffed.so,i am now being sponsered.so i can now start the ball rolling for my PR.looks like things are starting to fall into place.
im glad its done,as i really love the job and most of the people i have met, love the country.what more can i say.
so,after my interview, off i went with my delivery.salt lake city, here i come.it was a rush job,so attached a rocket to truck and got there 15 mins early.quick tip, next load done and on my way back.
as i was rounding the corner before sweetgrass,i noticed an animal in the road.whats a bloody alsation doing on the highway, only it wasnt an alsation,it was a wolf.it was eating something in the road,i must say,he was a clever wolf though.as i got closer,he moved to the hard shoulder, once id gone past,he went back into the road to finish his meal.nice!!!!!!!!!

  2. We are due over this year with hubby driving long haul, but I am very worried about some of the things I have heard, so can you PLEASE post what your earnings are, both on top and take home, and how much work do you do for nothing?
Is it also true that canadian companies doint pay layover pay if you have no load?
Well done with your pr, we hear that not everyone gets sponsered by h and r.
    Thanks.

im not going to post my earnings, although i will say,im earning more than i was in the uk,and i was on a good wage back there.
ive never not got layover pay,but ive not done much sitting round either.
dont know about people not getting sponsered.just keep your nose clean and keep working, shouldnt be a problem.
ive definately got no problems here,i love it,and im staying.
    good luck

  5. Thanks for the answers andy, at least you haven't ignored my questions as other bloggers have, and you're the only one to even allow it, but I really want someone to give us honest figures for earnings and no one wants to post them, why is that?
Glad to see you have never been refused layover and thanks for the good luck wishes, but we are not going to h and r

  7. Hi Jane

We have been here 14 months and Jag must be lucky and getting all the good paying runs because it is a real struggle with a family. People should be seriously taking note of the negative comments made as it is not a bed of roses and there are some weeks where you don't get paid a cent this is because the trip envelopes can not get put to the office until you get back from a trip. There is no lay over pay and no pay while waiting around for hours to be loaded or unloaded. I don't know if this will get posted but I am sick of reading all the blogs from people who have come over with a good amount of money behind them showing pictures of nice new houses and cars making it sound so perfect when if you ain't got much money when you arrive you are in for a
tough time. I am not being a coward writing this anonymous but I know what happens to the ones who dare print their name.

  8. Andy,
Excellent result. Well done on your nomination. You have stuck at it for along time on your own. I think you deserve it.

    Jane,
It would be silly of Andy to post his earnings, I wouldn't. We all work differently. One man's meat is another man's poison. He has obviously settled at H&R. Others haven't. Check the other driver's blogs, layovers are paid. You need to check your employer's terms & conditions.
Earnings are on mileage. Example: Drive 700 miles in a day at $0.35cdn/mile, your pay is $245. More than a day in UK. Sit around waiting for a load to be ready for 6 hours - nothing. You have to use abit of common sense to make the miles come up. You need to look at the average, not a day in isolation.

  9. anonymous.
firstly.what i earn is for my partner and me to worry about(nothing to worry about)
secondly,im not a lucky one getting high mileage runs.you use common sense.like its been pointed out, sometimes you dont get a wage because you havent got your trip envelopes in(sometimes its my own fault)you just dont go spending your money.
i dont think ive ever said it was a bed of roses, and those drivers that come here thinking its like the uk or want it to be like the uk,they are in for a big shock.ITS CANADA,NOT THE UK,change the attitude to a canadian one, work how they work.
as for this mis-conception of no layover pay,is rubbish.when ive been layed over, ive always got it.
those people that have come over with plenty of money and bought cars and houses, good for them, isnt that one of the reasons they came here.believe me,the money i came with was the very minimum,i didnt struggle,i just watched what i was spending.guess what?i got through it and im still here, and ive actually got money in my bank account, which i didnt have back in the uk.
life is about making choices and taking chances.whats good for one, isnt good for another.
i made those choices, might have been risky ones at the time, but with hard work and patience, you get there.im so glad i took the leap.the canadians are great people, and the country is fantastic.

  10. Mr Anonymous...
There is a guy I know who went out to Canada with only £1000 last year. He is not at H&R. He has worked bloody hard, & is now getting himself sorted. It can be done.

  11. Thanks for the replies but someone comments and says they have been there for 14 months I assume at h and r and says there is no layover pay but alan who is not in canada says it is always paid and you can earn 700 miles per day but andy says he doesn't get the high mileage runs so i assume he doesn't drive 700 miles a day.
It gets more confusing by the minit and andy has money in the bank but lives in a truck and pays no rent mortgage fuel bills child care costs or anything so he should have money.

  12. Thank you Andy for posting my comment.

    Jag

I totally agree about the Canadian way and being here this long I am in the Canadian way. We are very careful with money and have had to be every month for last last 18 months, but when you are actually either paying rent or a mortgage and all the utility bills and feeding a family of four you might realise how hard it is but no YOU'VE BEEN LIVING IN A TRUCK. I agree good for those that do come over with money and best of luck to them but what about the majority who don't and the families all come over together wanting and hoping to live the Canadian dream and they have to return to the UK as they can't survive. Yes it is a leap of faith but if you only read the good side I am sorry but you are totally misled. As for lay over I can assure you it is not rubbish there have been numerous occassions that my husband did not get paid lay over becaause H&R when they realised the load would not be ready when first stated on the pre plan would send another with a different pick up time. I am not entering into a slagging match. I just want people to have the opportunity to see a side from a family who did not have alot money to come here with as there are no blogs written by anyone to show their story. Yes we are still here and want to be here we have been and had to be so careful with money and due to this are not able to go out for treats especially in the winter as it involves money to go to places, but please let families know it is not easy. It is not "gossip" it is the truth.

  13. hi andy, firstly, congrats on the nomination, well done mate. Secondly the anon poster previously is wrong about layovers, if a time is changed because the loads not ready then they would give you a later time, which makes you even more eligable for layover.A pre-plan is just that, its not even your load until your dispatched on it. In 11 months i've only been parked up once and was given 2 layovers for it, no questions, no arguements. To jane p i'll tell you what i earn .42 cents/mile u.s .40 cents/mile canada, the trucks do 60mph so work it out, you know how hard you can work. Regards trip envelopes there 10 locations in canada where you can drop them, also hold some back when the miles are good for the weeks that are bad.

  14. Post this or don't, it's your blog Andy.

I got one layover paid after 6 phone calls to get an authorisation number, and was told on more than one occasion, there is no load, you will have to re-set where you are or do city work...refuse city work, and get no layover pay.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Mick and Barbara do not make me out to sound like a liar I am telling you there have been occasions where my husband has NOT been paid for a layover. There will be lots of current and former employees who could confirm this. As for the 10 places in Canada what about when you are in the States for over a week??? Keep on being best of buddies with Lyndon it is obviously paying off, you comment on you experiences I will comment on ours.

  18. Its really weird that you have to have an interview for the company to say if they are going to sponsor you or not. With my company, they automatically sponsor you anyway, which is the way it should be. Going without pay just because you have not got your envelope in yet. That’s disgusting. We just have to fax our run sheet in so we never go without. Each company is different though I guess. If you are happy where you are, good luck to you, and drive safe.
